Wenyu Zou
Whimsical Shadows
Giới Thiệu
Wenyu Zou is a Chinese sculptor who works primarily with ceramics, glass, and 3D printing. She graduated in 2023 from the Royal College of Art with a degree in Ceramics and Glass. Her practice draws heavily from personal experiences, emotions, and dreams, using metaphorical forms to express her perceptions of the world. Her series The Last Star features figures wearing small donkey-head masks. Coated in modeling clay over black ceramics and fired in the kiln, the works achieve a rustic, tactile texture. Through these childlike, softly colored forms, Wenyu subtly conveys her reflections on societal pressures and identity anxieties. By exploring various shapes and gestures, she channels feelings of stress, uncertainty, confusion, and escapism, all while navigating her own journey of self-discovery. From an editorial perspective, Wenyu is adept at translating her mental and emotional world across multiple media. Her training has equipped her with highly refined technical skills, resulting in works with excellent display presence. The faded and concealed coloring techniques she employs in her sculptures evoke the passage of time and the haziness of dreams. This contrast with the gentle palette allows viewers to empathize with her inner projections and the struggles brought about by the process of growing up.
