Tingliao Yan
Claybound Angelic Echoes
About Me
Tingliao Yan is a ceramic artist based in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi. Her series, Farewell to You on the 39th Night, draws inspiration from the heartfelt efforts of the artists behind the film The Prince of Egypt, who sincerely used audiovisual language to faithfully recreate the grand and sacred imagery from the Bible. This sincerity and craftsmanship deeply moved Yan, prompting her to create her own fantastical world. By combining angelic religious imagery with the artistry of stained glass windows in churches, she brought this remarkable series into existence, using technique of simulating lead strips in stained glass with three-dimensional glazes and employing kiln-change glazes to emulate the vibrant colors of church windows. Plants in the Field extends her worldview, embodying a natural balance. If beings can fly in the sky, then surely those who run on the earth must exist. The small wildman figures in this series represent the primal, untamed aspects of the world. Yan uses these raw forms to explore the connection between humanity and nature, reflecting the pure, essential vitality of life. The otherworldly heads represents Yan’s desire to incorporate natural, non-human elements into her characters. These heads, distinct from the human form, allow her to explore new dimensions of identity and form, pushing the boundaries of expression while remaining deeply rooted in the human experience. Their Language, derived from the otherworldly heads, introduces a group of characters dressed in high school uniforms. This series is more dynamic, focusing on subtle interactions between characters and evoking private emotions and memories. Yan’s work evolves here, shifting towards a more intimate and personal expression of connection. The influences of artists like William Blake, Charles Freger, Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes, and Fuyuko Matsui are woven throughout Yan’s creations. Their exploration of mystical and human realms, as well as their focus on emotional depth, shape Yan's artistic vision. Through her work, Yan seeks to create a spiritual world that resonates deeply with the viewer, offering a space for reflection and connection to something—whether that be the raw forces of nature or the private, shared human experiences. Message to Collectors: Thank you for visiting this world and for choosing to take away a piece of its memory.
