Joy Shenyushen
Happy Emergence
About Me
I am Joy, known in the ceramic community as Shenyu Shen. I currently live in Jingdezhen. My work has evolved from flat, two-dimensional pieces into three-dimensional ceramics, sculptures, and installations. My creations seem to step out of the two-dimensional world into reality, like seeds sprouting from the soil after a spring rain. Happy and Crying are my two main ceramic series, representing complementary human emotions. The vessels presented here are an extension of my Happy series. I am inspired by what is closest to me. My creative philosophy revolves around the flow of emotions—soft yet resilient. To collectors, I simply wish: may you find joy in these works. During our conversation, it became clear that Joy channels much of her experiences and reflections from the pandemic into her art. She is a deeply thoughtful female creator, and her works radiate her energy and positive outlook. Through her character designs, gestures, and use of color, Joy conveys distinctive traits of young Chinese women: vulnerable, occasionally melancholic yet never truly defeated, capable of loving others and animals, and while embracing beauty, they also reflect on women’s social circumstances. Engaging with Joy offers a window into how female artists express themselves and support each other within creative communities. Her work embodies a process of healing and growth, encouraging both creator and viewer to experience subtle transformations toward greater joy.
